AMISTAD SUMMER CURRICULUM INSTITUTE FOR NEW JERSEY EDUCATORS

Each year, the Amistad Commission hosts a Summer Curriculum Institute for New Jersey educators and administrators. This event provides an opportunity to learn from experts about various approaches to implementing the NJ Amistad Law in K-12 education across all subjects. The institute features plenary sessions, breakout sessions tailored to elementary, middle, and high school educators, as well as engaging entertainment.

We invite all educators—teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, department chairs, and more—to join us this summer for an enriching and informative experience.

August 4-7, 2025

Experience of A Lifetime: A Juneteenth Celebration

The Underground Railroad Museum of Burlington County will simultaneously host an “Experience of A Lifetime – A Juneteenth Celebration on the grounds of two (2) historic sites in the Burlington County. Area 1- Rancocas State Park, formerly the Powhatan Indian Reservation; Area 2- Timbuctoo, Westampton, NJ, one of several antebellum free black settlements in New Jersey.

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery. This event will be held on Saturday, June 14, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  These immersive activities will enable guests to “Learn and Experience” the Underground Railroad from a Freedom Walkers’ perspective. History articulated from a broad-based coalition of organizations and storytellers consisting of Indigenous Nations, Quakers, Abolitionists, Historical Societies, churches, re-enactors, school system leaders, legacy family members, community leaders, and more!

Area 1: Rancocas State Park- 794 Rancocas Mt. Holly Road, Westampton, NJ  08060

This 3.5-mile Freedom Trail will begin at Rancocas State Park (Rancocas Avenue Entrances) Burlington County, cross the Rancocas Nature Center and end in Timbuctoo, Westampton. As guest complete the trail and enter the grounds of Timbuctoo, they will be transported into a “celebration of freedom!”  (Freedom Trail Times – 11:00AM; 1:00PM; and 3:00PM.)

Area 2: Timbuctoo-130 Church Street, Westampton, NJ 08060

A complete “Celebratory Day of Events” filled with entertainment, dancing, vendors, re-enactments, storytelling, a “Taste of Freedom” (Chef Presentations – authentic food tasting), surprise guest appearances by iconic historic legacy family members, and ending with an impactful Underground Railroad Code and Final Act – A Gospel Concert!

Come hear presentations by the iconic historic family members from the following lineages: Harriet Tubman, William and James Still, Thomas Garrett, Frederick Douglass, the Lenape Nation, and meet Juneteenth royalty.  Indulge in our Chef’s “Taste of Freedom” delights, marvel with the numerous story tellers, listen to the sounds of Gospel music and notable Gospel artists!

NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR SOCIAL STUDIES

Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies is the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education. NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies. With members in all the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and 35 countries, NCSS serves as an umbrella organization for elementary, secondary, and college teachers of history, civics, geography, economics, political science, sociology, psychology, anthropology, and law-related education. The NCSS membership represents K-12 classroom teachers, college and university faculty members, curriculum designers and specialists, social studies supervisors, and leaders in the various disciplines that constitute the social studies.4
