New Jersey History Day and the Alice Paul Center for Gender Justice, invites educators to a dynamic professional development workshop exploring the history and legacy of women’s suffrage.

The day will open with a keynote from Dr. Beryl Satter, Professor of History at Rutgers University, whose scholarship focuses on 20th-century America, women’s and queer history, migration, and housing discrimination.

Educators will engage with compelling stories of the fight for women’s recognition and equality, while gaining strategies to help middle and high school students analyze primary sources within historical context. The workshop supports the National History Day framework and aligns with NJ Student Learning Standards.

Participants will receive:

• 5 NJ Professional Development hours

• A copy of Herstory: Women in American History lesson plan book

• Hands-on classroom activities, tools, and resources ready to use

• Lunch and a guided site tour

Each year, the Amistad Commission hosts a Summer Curriculum Institute for New Jersey educators and administrators. This event provides an opportunity to learn from experts about various approaches to implementing the NJ Amistad Law in K-12 education across all subjects. The institute features plenary sessions, breakout sessions tailored to elementary, middle, and high school educators, as well as engaging entertainment.

We invite all educators—teachers, administrators, curriculum specialists, department chairs, and more—to join us this summer for an enriching and informative experience.

The institute will be held in-person at Kean University.
